| Gut Directed Hypnotherapy - what happens in therapy sessions? |
Gut directed hypnotherapy involves induction of hypnosis followed by a sequence of suggestions aimed at normalising bowel movements and removing pain and bloating.
This will normally be a part of every session. You will also be given a specially designed CD to listen to on a daily basis to reinforce the treatment, plus various charts to complete to measure progress. Treatment is usually on a weekly basis and for most people short-term (although it naturally varies from person to person).
As well as time devoted to hypnotherapy and relaxation work, areas that may be explored in sessions include:- |
| |
The connection between life events, thoughts, feelings, and IBS symptoms |
| |
Challenging self-defeating thought patterns (e.g. ‘I must be there for others’, ‘I can’t sit still and do nothing’, ‘I must get things just right’, ‘I need everyone to like me’) |
| |
Catastrophising, perfectionism |
| |
Anxiety (anxiety is nothing to worry about).
We may also look at how you deal with anger (your own or others), how easy or difficult you find being assertive (standing up for your rights), your expectations of yourself (realistic or not), and how you cope with making mistakes (supportive of yourself or mentally beating yourself up). How you think and behave in any of these areas can affect your stress levels and, in turn, your digestive system.
